"Since God
is the highest perfection,
the harmony composed
for his praise
should follow
the strictest rules
that perfection can claim,
as far as human imperfection
can realize them."
-- Johann Josef Fux, 1725

FAQs

This program is written for students to learn how to write music. It works with any instrument.

But . . . there are problem areas. The problems are created by the differences in "open" notes on an instrument. For example, the piano has white and black notes. THe violin has four strings, and in their "open" position they cover the notes 'G', 'D', 'A' and 'E'. Middle C is not one of the notes.

Yet every piano student begins with mastering Middle C and then working from there. It is not the same for violin students, and other string instruments.

In addition, this course eventually teaches the use of Tenor and Bass clefs. Violin students, or flute students, have no use for these clefs.

To make the program "usuable" for everyone, the basis of this program is the geography of the keyboard -- white and black notes. Students are taught how to navigate a keyboard, even a simple electronic one.

Having said that, students learning other instruments should be given the opportunity to play their msuic on their chosen instrument. To do this, they may need the help of their isntrumental teacher. Such help will make the students' learning a richer and more rewarding experience.

The piano keyboard allows students to eventually navigate the whole range of notes covered by other instruments. In that sense, it makes the ideal instrument of choice for learning how to write music. It is not essential, but it is helpful.
